STUDIES AND LIFE IN BULGARIA
The Democracy of Bulgaria is a country of southeastern Europe with an extent of 110.910 square km and a population of 7.602.116. It is a member of the U.N. since 1st January 2007 and one of the fastest developing countries of the former East Block. The capital and biggest city is Sofia, with about 1.100.000 residents. Other big cities are Filippoupolis (Plovdiv) the ‘summer capital’ Varna, Pyrgos (Burgas) in the Black Sea, Rouse (at the banks of Danube), Stara Zagora, Pleven, Lovets, Soumen and the Beliko Tarnovo, the first capital city of Bulgaria.
The climate of Bulgaria for the biggest part of the country is Continental mitigated towards the south with Mediterranean. The average annual temperature is 10℃, but with great thermometry.
Bulgaria, even though a member of the U.N., does not yet belong to the Eurozone. Transactions are still being made in the local currency, lev, with equivalence 1 euro = 1.95583 leva.
Cost of living
In comparison to Greece the cost of living in Bulgaria remains considerably lower. The food items are at half price compared to Greece. To rent a furnished apartment (one-bedroomed) in a central area of the capital you will need 280 – 350 euros, while for a night out for dinner about 12 euros per person and 0,40 = 1 euro for coffee.
The state universities of Bulgaria are of global prestige. Many important inventions come from Bulgaria. Science and research have a long tradition in the country. In Bulgaria you will find excellent conditions for successful studies. The universities and research centers have excellent material and technological infrastructure. At the same time the tuition fees are very competitive compared to other universities abroad.
Throughout Bulgaria there are excellent transportation. The capital and the big cities have a well-organised network of transportation. The Sofia metro connects several areas to the center of the city, there are also buses, trolleys and trams. The ticket to use the means of transport is 1.60 leva (0,80 euro). The prices for taxis are affordable.
The city of Sofia is contemporary European city. Along with the other big cities of Bulgaria it can take pride in the cultural, recreational and athletic events they offer. Numerous department stores, in Sofia there are currently 7 big malls, and 3 more are under construction, beautiful cafes, green parks, fantastic restaurants satisfy every financial ability and all taste preferences, theatres, cinemas, an opera house, and many museums. The Greek element in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is located in the Northern borders of our country and is accessible in a very convenient way. Sofia is only a 4-hour drive from Thessaloniki and connects to Athens with daily flights that last 50 minutes.
For Greeks it is a place of attraction with its beautiful surroundings and respectful culture, for investments and also for studies of European level.
Greek businesses like banks (PIREAUS, ALPHA BANK, EMPORIKI), mobile phone companies (GERMANOS, COSMOTE) and also numerous productive units and commercial companies are powerfully present. The Greek student element, especially at the capital, is intense and very active.
It is really distinctive that if you walk in Sofia, you will probably hear Greek. It is worthy to mention that the Bulgarian people are familiar with the Greek element. Over 30% of the population speak or understand Greek.
